Grammar = Chapter 1 - Sentences

 CHAPTER -1, SENTENCES 

  





INTRODUCTION:- 

 SENTENCES are the group of word which make complete sense

  Example – (1) He is going to school. 

                      (2) 8th class students are very intelligent. 

 Important things to understand is that the group of word may have a complete sense like “he is going” (it is telling us that he is going somewhere. It can’t be “good I student am” (here we can’t able to understand what sentence is saying.  

    KINDS OF SENTENCES:- 

 There are 5 types of sentences based on  structure:- 

   (1) Assertive (declarative) sentences 

   (2) Interrogative sentences 

   (3) Imperative sentences 

   (4) Exclamatory sentences 

    (5) Optative sentences   

ASSERTIVE (DECLARATIVE) 

 This type of sentence declare any thing 

  It is further classified into 2 categories:- 

    (1) Affirmative – These type of sentence declare positive thing. 

   Example – He is good boy. 

    (2) Negative – These types of sentences declare negative things. 

    Example – He is not going to school  

INTERROGATIVE 

 These types of sentences are generally used to ask questions.

  These are further classified into 4 types:- 

   (1) Yes\No type questions – Questions whose response is in YES or NO. 

   Example – Are you a student of 8th class? 

  (2) WH words type questions – Question begin with WH words (what, who, how, when, etc) and response will be in statement 

   Example – Who are you? 

(3) Choice type question – Questions have option statement. 

 Example – Would you prefer chocolate or cake? 

(4) Tag questions – Question ending will be by the helping verb and that has contradiction form. 

Example – He is good class, isn’t he? (If am is there then it become ain’t)   

IMPERATIVE

 These types of sentences express command, order or request. 

 Example – (1)Shoot them {command (generally used in case of army)} 

(2) Go to the market {Order} 

(3) Take medicine at the proper time {Advice} 

EXCLAMATORY 

 These types of sentences are used in sudden emotions (that may be in case of happiness and sadness).  Example – (1) Hurray! We won the match. 

(2) Alas! He died. 

  

OPTATIVE 

 These type of sentences used for blessing and prayer. 

 Example – (1) May! 8th class students live long. 

(2) May! Mohan able to crack JEE.   

PARTS OF SENTENCES

 There are 2 parts of sentences:- 

(1) Subject – It refers the person who had done the work. 

Example – He is doing hard work to crack JEE. 

(2) Predicate (Objects) – It refers the work had been done by the person. 

Example - He is doing hard work to crack JEE. 

  

HOW TO IDENTIFY ASSERTIVE SENTENCES??? 

 These type of sentences can be identified when it refers simple sentences (simple thing is explained)   

HOW TO IDENTIFY AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES?? 

 These type of sentences can be identified by seeing that there is not any word like ‘not, never, seldom, rarely, barely’ 

  

HOW TO IDENTIFY NEGATIVE SENTENCES??? 

 These type of sentences can be identified by seeing that there is word like ‘not, never, seldom, rarely, barely’  

HOW TO IDENTIFY INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES 

 By seeing the helping verb (is/am/are/do/does/has/have) and WH words 

 In starting and seeing the punctuation naming question mark (?)   

HOW TO IDENTIFY YES/NO TYPE QUESTION???? 

 By notice when answer will be in yes/no and in starting helping verb (is/am/are/do/does/did/have/has/had) is coming and there is sign of question mark (?)   

HOW TO IDENTIFY WH WORD TYPE QUESTIONS???? 

 By seeing question begins with WH words (who, how, when, what, where) and reply will be in a statement   

HOW TO IDENTIFY CHOICE TYPE QUESTION???

  By seeing conjunction ‘or’ and choices are given.   

HOW TO IDENTIFY TAG QUESTIONS??? 

 By seeing use of same helping verb use in statement is in contradiction form (n’t) and use of comma after statement.   

HOW TO IDENTIFY IMPERATIVE SENTENCES???

  By seeing the order, command and request type sentences. 

  

HOW TO IDENTIFY EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES?

 By seeing exclamatory sign (!) and express sudden emotions.   


HOW TO IDENTIFY OPTATIVE SENTENCES??? 

 By seeing the exclamatory sign (!) and seeing the word ‘may’ used mostly and used to express prayer and to bless. 

  

HOW TO IDENTIFY SUBJECT???

  Mostly the first word is being considered as Subject   

HOW TO IDENTIFY PREDICATE (OBJECTS)???

  Mostly the word after first word is considered as Predicate (object)
